MarksBrothers meeting minutes, April 20, 2006

Meal provided by David Farnsworth

Speaker: Bob Ross

Bob was to have given a talk on “Foot Steps of John and Paul”. Since attendance was low, it was decided to postpone the presentation until Mays meeting. David had also planned to demonstrate blogging with a challenge for all MarksBrothers publishing on there own blogs. That too was postponed but the connection to the internet from the fellowship hall was tested.

In addition to Bob and David, Paul Simpson was present.

Business Meeting: It was moved and passed that the supplies used for the Youth pancake breakfast are to be a donation to the youth.

Dee Dee has asked that we attend the Wesley Center annual fundraiser April 28th, at 6:00 pm. Those attending recommend we all purchase tickets tomorrow (Sunday) at $20 a person.

Linda Salfin, president of St. Marks UMW has sent a request that the MarksBrothers provide security for the Hand Works Fair, Nov 4th and 5th. In the discussion we felt we would not be able to do this since we lack training in security, and we can’t rely on sufficient attendance from the group.

David Farnsworth announced his resignation as secretary.

program for the next MarksBrothers Meeting

As a program for the next MarksBrother, I would like to demonstrate
Blogging. As a part of the demonstration, I would like to have each member
create a blog for his statement of fath. We can then create a web page with
links to all the testimonials as our witness to Christ.

This will take some courage since your views are now visible to the entire
world.

I will demonstrate how to delete the blog afterword for those who are
uncomfortable.

To do this I will invite all with laptops and wireless capability to bring
them

I will also get a wireless router and connect to the church web access in
the office and cable it into the Fellowship hall.(this will be a temporary
connection).

Finally I would like to discuss the MarksBrothers group and the connection
required to the Methodist Church and your feelings on if we should implement
those requirements.

The next meeting is on April the 13th at the Fellowship hall at 6:30 PM.

I would appreciate your involvement. I have given Paul a book on BLOGS
expressing the importance that they may represent.

Blogging for Christ

Blogging for Christ

Many Christians are reluctant to enter into conversation on the internet. It is a risky business. Yet Christ said take up your cross and follow me. He also said, go out and spread the good word. How can we complain about the risk of identity theft when Christ went to the certainty of death on the cross.

It is important that we do as Christ says. Christ is speaking to each of us and we all hear a slightly different message. It is through exploring each others messages that we can hope to get a fuller understanding of the complete message while still on earth. I am to impatient to wait for the fuller understanding after we die. Besides, there may be something we need to do here and now.

I am not one who believes that all religious views are equal. The Christian view is correct and all others are in error. But there is hope for all men (and women too), and each contains a valuable piece of the greater meaning that we need to understand. And I am not saying that my view is a perfect vision of Christianity but that I strive for that understanding. I am just saying that I need your help in achieving that understanding, and that not any religious view will do.

There is a truth and a light and it is just out of our grasp. Risk reaching out to others to find the puzzle pieces so we can together gain a more perfect understanding.

Kinder-Desert-Garden

I have accepted the role of coordinator for the Nash Kinder-Desert-Garden. The garden was designed by St. Mark’s Clay. I have the design, which I will bring to the meeting Thursday. Rusty Farley, the Nash Principle, would like us to finish the garden by planting the remaining 10 to 12 plants remaining on the design. In addition, she would like signs with the plant names to be purchased and put in place.

She would like us to do the planting Saturday, March 25th. This is the same day as our pancake breakfast, so we were hoping to do it in the afternoon. Rusty says she plans to be at our pancake breakfast.

A Successful Febuary Meeting

We had 13 attent the dinner at the Metropolitan Grill Thursday evening.. The members and wives had a good dinner and lively conversation.

For the next meeting, we need someone to volunteer to bring the dinner. Please email back if you would be willing to do that.

I will request permission to do the dinner.

MarksBrothers meeting minutes, Jan 12th

Meal provided by TMM Family Services

Speaker: Renee Villani

The tour of TMM Family services went very well. We had five member present, (those not present missed a great tour and meal)..

TMM Family services has a number of foster care home located on the campus visited. A house parent resides in each with four to six children in each. We were allowed to tour several of the houses (with permission of the house parent), and meet several of the children. The children are fed meals in there houses except for dinners each day.

We were fed a meal after the children ate. The food was wonderful, much better you would expect of an institution. In the discussion, it was expressed that the key difference between a religious based institution such as TMM, an secular institutions is dramatic. Even though the staff avoids imposing there religious beliefs, the staff’s beliefs, positively effect the children’s treatment.

The normal contributions for the MaarksBrothers meal were collected and donated to TMM. TMM had no requirement that we pay for the meal as it was part of the tour, but everyone agreed that the donation should be made.

Business Meeting: no business meeting held.

Agenda for Feb 9th Meeting:

We will be taking our wives or significant other to the Metropolitain Grill to celibrate Valentines day. It is not necessary that we come as couples however and I would encourage singles to come also.

We have space for 24 seats at Metropolitan Grill (Magee and N. Oracle near Trader Joe's) on Thursday, Feb 9 at 6:30 PM. This is for our
traditional Valentine's dinner. wives, girlfriends, and significant
others are invited.

We will be able to order from the regular menu, however, they will be
adding an 18% tip on the bill (not a problem as the service there is
usually pretty good).

If you are interested, please let Paul Simpson know my Tuesday. Feb 7 as he has to give them a final count.

A pancake breakfast is planned for Feb. 4th. There will be no other meeting prior to the breakfast, so we will need to get organized without additional meetings. Any suggestions would be helpful. This intended to be a dry run for a March breakfast. Bob Ross has asked me to call him if things are not set by the prior Wednesday so we can get the food bought.. We are planning to buy for 50, since we have know idea who will come. If no one shows up, March will have pancakes as the meal.

TMM FAMILY SERVICES, INC.

TMM FAMILY SERVICES, INC.

I (David Farnsworth) had a senior moment during our last meeting concerning a visit to TMM, I forgot the groups name. The executive Director is Don Straungh. Alberta Farnsworth is a member of the TMM board. St Marks UMC has been a major supporter of TMM. The suggestion is that we meet at TMM for our monthly dinner and have TMM present a program describing what they do, and what we could do. I will be calling TMM soon to see what is available, and report to the next meeting.

MarksBrothers meeting minutes, Nov 10th,2005

After grace, offered by DeeDee Azhikakath , the meeting started with Dinner, of barbequed turkey provided by David Farnsworth, and cake provided by Jim Jackson.

During dinner DeeDee gave a talk which combined a description of her success at the Wesley Center and the ways which Marks Brothers could use her experience it build the group.

DeeDee provide a worksheet to aid us in identifying the areas we need to work on and discuss suggestions for the future of the group:

What is our Primary Mission

Who is our group for

What is the target audience within the group

How are you going to implement it?

Communication is key. Each idea needs to be transmitted three times to be effective. And in three different ways. DeeDee went to each church with students going to the U of A, and hand wrote letters to them. Her goal was to double her attendance from 5 to10 of 15. Her first meeting had forty. 1st contact has to be a month before the event to allow time for follow up to provide the additional two contacts. Personal contact is very effective

DeeDee mentioned “ROPES” which stands for Research-, Objective, the event??, and Evaluation.

She used the analogy of a fire with coals to suggest that we focus on a few activities rather than spread ourselves too thin. If you spread the coals, the fire goes out. She mentioned has had fewer activities with larger attendance to each event.

Continuing the coals analogy, DeeDee mentioned that while for the first time she has Christmas off, she will need to be working to prepare for the spring event during that time to get the “coals” built up.

Treasures Report: not available, Bill to email when available

Old Business

Agua Prieta- Jim Jackson reports a video is in work for the Church there.

Primaveria- no action, the calendar is full. No discussion of last month’s suggestion of starting another schedule.

. $178 dollars made from car wash. Car was post event review: successful, consider making annual at the time of the pumpkin sales.

the roofing project: It was suggested I not mention the name of the home owner involved for privacy considerations. Dave McGiffin suggested someone (not himself) research what was needed. It was agreed to meet Sat. at 8:00 am to take a small group to estimate the effort. Dave McGiffing was to contact the owner to get approval for the visit and call. (Post meeting activity: Dave didn’t call, the Sat meeting was cancelled).

A speaker was suggested for after the new year, Al Kent, of the Nomads). Will call to confirm (I failed to record who is calling).

.

New Business

pancake breakfasts- Mars Men were contacted and they would be happy for us to take over the pancake breakfasts. Bob Brobec is the contact for technical information. Tentative date is Easter in conjunction with the Youth group.

Bob Ross reports that he has offered our services to do plantings around “our” bridge. He will let us know when our support is required. This was approved by the lack of any objections.

Feb 9th meeting. It was suggested we meet again at the Metro Grill and invite wives. The was some discussion of the arrangement for unmarried members (deleted per direction from Bob Ross).

At the Conclusion, I asked DeeDee what (after we did the “ROPES” exercise) if we found we wanted to help with Wesley Center, how could we help? Her suggestions: Study packets, Final Bags (food), help raise money, Do a dinner with them, do a package breakfast with them.

MarksBrothers meeting minutes, Oct. 13,2005

Meeting started with Dinner, of pizza, and cake provided by Jim Jackson.

The meeting started with the discussion of the email from Dave McGiffin asking the group to support the roofing project . The discussion did not get to specifics and will be added to the November addenda.

Old Business

Dave McGiffin asked Jim Jackson (Old Business), to discuss the progress at Agua Prieta. Jim reported progress continues but tha health probems have prevented his making trips there. Jim continues to stay in contact with Chester Parks,

Car Was: Marks Brothers has scheduled a car wash for Oct. 29th (Sat) ath the church. We will meet at 8:00 am, and bring a shop vac and car washing materials: buckets and sponges. The car wash will be provide for a free will offering. Dave McGiffin will get the date into the church bulletin on Oct 23rd. Dave McGiffin to bring an extension cord.

New Business

DeeDee Azhikakath is planning to be present at the Nov 10th meeting and Tom Jelinek will be at our Dec meeting.

Revitalization effort: Dave McGiffin suggests we try to schedule Primavera dinners at time other than the time the church is currently serving. Dave McGiffing suggested we work with Nash, and he will check with Nash on there needs. David Farnsworth was directed to post the Marks Brothers web site (see below). It was suggested we create posters. Dave Farnsworth suggested the group work with the Marks Men to restart with the Pancake Breakfasts. We would combine there experience with out manpower plus any other participants we could get interested. The youth were mentioned, with all proceeds to go to the youth. The pancake breakfasts would be held four to six times a year, with the goal to provide a community event, rather than primarily a money raising event. Again, the pancakes would be provided with a free will offering.

It was suggested we get a speaker at each meeting (with Nov and Dec covered). And advertise the meetings to all church members with posters and notices in the church bulletin (and the church news letter?).

Meeting Thurday, Oct 13

A message from the President:

To All Marks’ Brothers

A note to remind you of our meething on Thursday (Oct. 13) @6:30 pm. Instead of our meeting being held in the Fellowship Hall, we will be meeting in the room next to the library, rm 18. Another group will be using the Fellowship Hall.

In our meeting we will be discussing ways to vitalize and stimulate interest in our group. Perhaps, by changing activities, agendas, more publicity, ect.

Sandi Heilman has told me that there is someone in our church that is need of our services. His name is Randy Carver. He is a Gulf War veteran who is disabled. A portion of his house roof is in need of repair. Because of his disability, he is unable to do it himself. So I have offered our assistance. He will supply the labor. He is in no particular hurry but it needs to be done. I have invited him to attend this meeting, depending on his health. I hope there are those of you who can commit to help with his need. He has certainly earned it with his service to our country.

I hope to see you all of you at Thursdays meeting. We need to be active if we expect Mark’s Brother to survive.

With God’s Everlasting Love

Dave McGiffin

ps Dave Johnson will be prividin the meal, and Jim Jackson, soda and cake.

serve the meal at the Wesley Center

The Plan:

The Marks Brothers are planning to make and serve the meal at the Wesley Center this Wed, Sept. 21. Timing is gathering at St. Marks early enough to arrive at the Wesley center by 6:00 pm.. At that time we will setup for the dinner, then attend the warship service. After the service we will join the students in eating the dinner, with a chance to interact with the students. I hope to have at least three Marks Brothers present. Dave McGiffin and myself are committed to be there. I suggest we contribute to the meal as we normally would and contribute the money to the Wesley Center.

Menu: Pork Chops or roast, cooked in mushroom soup, with stuffing for 40 people. Bread, salad, milk, vegetable, dessert.. We should be prepared to swerve on paper plates since the dishwasher may be inoperative. All food to be prepared in advance,

Please email of your interest now or in future Wednesdays. I feel this ministry could help us recover from the cancellation of this fall’s dinner and help us to reevaluate our mission.

Westly Center Dinner Schedule

One project suggested was serving dinner at the Wesley Methodist center at the U of A on Wed nights. Since little interest was shown on such short notice, please email me if you have a interest and we can organize a small group to do this without waiting for the full group. Rachel (Farnsworth) Mosher is involved and I can coordinate our efforts though her.

The Dinners are on Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM. I would like to setup a list for each meal night and see if we can get three people to do the dinner. We will show up there with food at about six, serve dinner, and eat with the students, then cleanup. When we get a commitment, I will verify with DeeDee that we can do it. You can each add a comment to that post, or email me.

Minutes of the Marks Brothers, Sept 8, 2005

Dinner was ordered by a call to have pizza delivered. In addition, Jim Jackson provided the Cake and drinks.

We were given a presentation by Harry Rody, Chaplin of: USS Arizona Reunion Assocation, Inc.. He started with a presentation of the case concerning the commanding officers at Perl Harbor: Kimmel and Short. The group was presented with a form letter intended to be sent to the President of the United States. If you visit the Marks Brothers web site at http://marksbrothersstmarksumc.blogspot.com/ , you can visit links in the above comments.

Business Meeting:

Old Business: the date of the upcoming Mark’s Brothers Roundup Dinner was said to be Oct 8. After the discussion menu and ticket sales, a motion was made by John Stuhlmuller to the effect that the dinner should be cancelled. The motion was seconded by Dave Johnston. In discussion we were asked to consider this years experience and the money lost and the chances of a more positive result this time. In a show of hands, the motion passed, the dinner is cancelled.

The vote seems to have created tension in the group, with a questioning of the groups purpose. Our two guests : Harry Rody and Jeffery Salfin expressed embarrassment at participating in a major decision. We invite all interested parties to participate in helping us to recover from this change in direction by commenting on the role a men’s group can have at St. Marks and what we could do to both grow and to fulfill that goal. Pleas email me at farnswd@comcast.net. I will post the comments on the web site. Everyone can visit the site and discuss any comments received.

The web site provides a means to open the discussion to any interested party that could be served or cold serve in such a group. Alternatively email me or any member of the group with comments or suggestions.

I will post a message to this effect and you can each add a comment to that post, or email me.

One suggestion I have is to tighten up our communications via email and the web site to provide an agenda prior to the meeting and to send out the agenda with a meeting notice. This will remind the membership of the meeting and motivate them to come. One complaint I heard was the short notice, and the resulting lack of ability to deal with conflicting commitments. Please email me with addenda items and provide me with information concerning guests and programs. I will post this and provide them to the St. Marks office prior to the meeting. My email addresses: davef@tucsonembedded.com; dave.farnsworth@honeywell.com and davef@comcast.net .Comments from all officers would also be appropriate.

Next meeting: Oct. 13, 2005, 6:30pm. David Johnson to provide the meal, and Jim Jackson the signature cake and soda.

Minutes:

St. Mark’s Marks Brothers meeting, Paul Simpson, presiding.

Next meeting is Aug. 11, Thursday. Dee Dee is invited to talk about her work at U of A.

The “Fall Festival” was discussed. (we need to think about the name). There will be a dinner and an auction. The dinner is planned to be pulled pork. We will be selling tickets in advance during September.

The polled pork is available in tubs which is easier than buying the pork loins as we had previously planned. Dave Johnson, Paul . and Bob Ross are the food committee.

Please think of (and bring to the meeting) suggestions for a theme for the celebration. We also need to decide on the mission, which we will need to designate for the 10% of the proceeds.

Next meeting food is to be provided by John S.

(I will be among the missing and in Colorado – Dave F.)

Jim Jackson discussed the activity at Agua Preta: The health clinic now has running water through out. Two doctors are visiting once a week. They are providing a different preventative treatment each week. A industry is being developed- a block factory. They are getting more cloths than they can us so are running a thrift store for the extra.

The Marks Brother’s Fall Festival dinner will be a port tenderloin. Bill Fritz is to start in July to have Messenger articles.
<>10% of the proceeds are to go to a mission of our choice. We need to think of the mission we want this to go to.

Again, if we can determine a night of a sports event, please email the group to arrange the outing.

Next meeting: July 14th. Paul Simpson to provide a sub sandwich and Jim Jackson his signature cake.
